Couple
of years ago I met and auditioned a new spin instructor who was also
a Marathon runner! I was so impressed and in awe.. 26.2 miles of
RUNNING. I could never do that! I considered myself to be in pretty
good shape, but made mention that I liked the security of the gym and
was proud to call myself a "Gym rat". I had cheered and watched my
husband compete and excel in many triathlons and then one day after
watching people of all different fitness levels cross the finish line
at a Half Iron Man event I said " Hey I can do this"! Next day my
husband (Craig) signed me up for a Half Iron Man!
I am not very proud to say that about 3 months before the event I had still not committed
to a Half Iron Man plan! What a rude awakening it was when I tried a
sprint tri (8 weeks before the Half Iron Man) and was totally freaked
out by the swim! Next couple of weeks I spent time swimming, biking and
running! Leaving your training for the "last minute" is something I would never recommend anyone do by the way!
All I can say is that even though I never considered myself an athlete all
those years of taking classes and spending time in the gym paid off BIG
TIME! Crossing the line at the 70.3 Eagle Man Triathlon in 2008 was one
of the proudest "athletic" moments of my life! I have since done
smaller running events and completed 2 Marathons! My first marathon
(Philadelphia) with the instructor I had auditioned (who now is a rock
star spin and Body Pump instructor) and the second one
(Richmond)which qualified me for the Boston marathon which I ran with
my husband! I would encourage anyone to try a Group Exercise class! Its
such a great, fun and non-competitive way to get into shape! Who knows
where that will take you next!
