Indoor Cycle instructors and class participants I would love to hear your thoughts on:
- Best type of music to keep you motivated during a spin class
- Lyrics/Songs that you may find offensive and should not be used
- Any other helpful hints for instructors with regards to music selection

Sarah A. uses a lot of EDDIE VEDDER & PEARL JAM tunes in her spin class music selections -- steady beats and great highs & lows for motivation to go faster/slower.
Hey Samantha, Jamie the instructor on Wednesday nights has a good selection of music and from the times I've taken her class, none of her music had offensive lyrics. The only time I heard music with offensive lyrics was from a sub who substituted for your wonderful Tuesday noon class, I think he said his name was Rob or Bob. I think the Beattles have some upbeat songs, but I can't think of any right this second.
It is hard to come up with general rules since each class is ssoooooo different. My lunchtime class at S&H is very different than some of my evening classes elsewhere because of the members who attend that timeslot. In general, I think if it can be played on the radio it is fair game. The only rules I have have for 'type' is a good beat so members can tailor their cadance to the rhythm, and nothing that makes me tired or depressed. Also cycle instructors should know their music inside and out and have a plan for class.
I fully agree that songs with offensive langauge should't be used. Personally, I would be embarrassed to use songs like that in my class and I don't think it would be motivating. However, what do you all feel about songs like Keeps Gettin' Better Christina Aguilera? The lyrics are very positive except for the one word. I haven't use it yet, but I have a DJ remix of this at 140 BPM's and I would expect most people to enjoy. I know it was a Bodypump song, but maybe they cleaned it up.

About 5 years ago, I used the song "Picture" by Kid Rock for cool down. I thought the class liked it, it was a number 1 hit at the time.
I think that ultimately, music selection, use of screens, and class style is primarily up to the instructor. I don't think instructors want to be told what type of music to use, whether they must use screens, etc. Unless there are specific issues, I think music selection is part of the class preparation. Thanks!
I agree with you Sue! We should all be free to design the class and members can 'vote' with their attendance.

I liked Sam's playlists! If I were to be a cycle DJ for an hour, I'd mix:

Country: Lady Antebellum, Shania Twain
Rock: 3 Doors Down, Lincoln Park, Nickelback, Evanescence, Green Days
R&B: Cassie, Jay Z, Rihanna, Mariah Carey
Pop: Britney, Christina Aguilera, Colbie Caillat, Pink (Sam you play a lot of Pink already!), Fergie, the Fray
Hip-Hop/Rap: Flo Rida, Nelly, B.o.B. I wish we could spin more Eminem :J
Flamenco: Jesse Cook

Personally I think classical like Bach may work, but some people could be irritated. Anyways I just don't want to hear another Lady Gaga or Katy Perry, not because they're not good, only that they're really over saturated.
